Better than Kale: Lumity News that Makes You Feel Good
Deon Brown’s dream is to become a chef—and Lumity is helping him achieve it.
Deon is a recent graduate of Ombudsman Chicago South, an alternative high school on the southwest side of Chicago. Last summer, he also completed Lumity’s Pre-Apprenticeship program, which helps students from alternative schools obtain an entry level position, transition into the workplace and prepare for future careers.
Deon is now the dietary concierge at Legacy Healthcare—a promotion he earned within just a few months of joining the organization. A self-proclaimed “non-people person,” Dean credits Lumity for helping him develop customer service skills which he uses daily in his new role working with residents. He is also gaining experience in the kitchen, learning how it’s organized and gaining an understanding of different dietary requirements.
His next career step… Applying to culinary school this spring.
“Lumity taught me the skills I needed to get a job and get a job I was interested in and could improve in. They still check in with me to make sure I’m progressing. It makes me feel good that somebody has my back.” – Deon Brown
